MCD-500 features and benefits

Filed under: GET MCD-500 series — Ralf @ 5:19 AM

DanfossVLT Softstarter MCD-500

Danfoss VLT Softstarter MCD-500 is a true total motor starting solution indeed.

Built in current transformers measure the actual motor current and provide accurate feedback for perfectly controlled motor ramp profiles.

AAC, the Adaptive Acceleration Control, automatically employs the best starting and stopping profile for the specific application.

AAC, the Adaptive Acceleration Control means that for each start and for each stop the Softstarter compares and adapts automatically the process to the chosen profile best suited to the particular application.

The DANFOSS VLT Softstarter MCD-500 has a four line graphical display and a logic keypad making programming as easy as a walk in the park.

Advanced setup is possible displaying operational status.

Three menu systems: Quick Menu, Application Setup and Main Menu provide optimum programming approach.

The perfect solution also for more severe applications such as pumps, conveyors, fans, mixers, compressors, centrifuges, mills, saws but also so many more!

The power range is from 21A to 1.6KA (7.5 to 800KW) or even up to 1.2MW with an inside Delta Connection. Versions are available for 200 to 690VAC.

Here a highlight summary of MCD-500 features and its benefits.

Aside from the very well known and appreciated user friendliness we enjoy:

AAC, Adaptive Acceleration Control adapts automatically to the chosen starting and stopping profile.

Adjustable busbars allow for both bottom and top entry (360A to 1.6KA or 100 to 800KW) which is space saving, translates into less cable cost and allows for easy retrofitting.

Inside Delta (6 wire connection) means that a smaller Softstarter model can be selected for some applications.

Log menus with 99 events and trip log provide ready diagnostic information on events, trips and performance to ease the analysis of the application.

Auto Reset for less down-time.

Jog (slow speed operation) option is available to enhance the application flexibility.

Second order thermal model allows motors to be used to their full potential without any damage from overloading.

Internal Bypass Contactors (21 to 215A or 7.5 to 110KW) save space and wiring to external bypass solutions, means very little heat dissipation when running, eliminates costly fans, wiring and/or additional bypass contactors.

Auto start/stop clock is available to increase the application flexibility even further.

Ultra compact size – MCD-500 is among the smallest in their class to save space in cabinets and other application setups.

Four line graphical display for optimum programming approach and setup for viewing operational status.

Multiple programming setup (Standard Menu, Extended Menu and Quick Setup Menu) simplifies the programming but still holding to maximum flexibility.

Multiple languages are available in the display menus to serve the whole world.

Remote operation of MCD-500 is facilitated by the dedicated remote operator kit. The operator unit is rated IP54 (or Nema 12) and is mounted on the cabinet front and allows therefore remote control, status indication and motor monitoring of an individual VLT Softstarter using RS-485 serial communication.

DANFOSS Softstarters

Filed under: GET MCD-500 series — Ralf @ 3:42 AM

Soft starts protect gear, goods, equipment and environment

After the completion of the FC-300 category last month I was supposed, or at least I was actually planning to continue with other VFD’s like the VLT-2800, the VLT Micro or FC-51 or else also with the so called Aqua Drive, the FC-200 series but due to its actuality I decided to shift this month back to the Softstarter topic because we do expect the release of the new Danfoss MCD-500 model now and it is expected to revolutionize the market and to raise the standard once more in this industry.

Before going into more details let us recall again together what Softstarters are about. We spoke already about this product range in the GET Softstarters category but let us just quickly refresh our minds again:

An AC motor in general switched directly on to the mains power supply will ultimately struggle to reach its nominal speed as quick as possible.

This draws maximum current from the power supply and accelerates the application with its maximum torque and depending on the particular application, this can cause different problems.

Applications like pumps, conveyers, centrifuges and bandsaws must be started slowly to prevent mechanical shocks such as water hammer and strains on bands, couplings and shafts.

Principle of a Phase Angle Control:

A Softstarter is an electronic device that regulates the voltage to the motor and this provides a smooth transition from standstill to full speed operation of the application.

DANFOSS VLT Softstarters all use the principle of phase angle control, a back to back coupled thyristors ramp up of the motor voltage.

In some DANFOSS VLT Softstarters, current transformers measure the actual motor current, providing feedback for starting current control but also for numerous motor and application protection functions.

DANFOSS VLT Softstarters cover a comprehensive range:

Soft starting and soft stopping (equally important) can be controlled in a number of ways depending on the application.

Some applications require non linear voltage ramp up and the voltage ramp is therefore related to the actual current drawn. Conversely, a bandsaw as another classic example requires a quick stop function provided by a DC brake.

Then again, a number of applications require a kick-start torque for an instantaneous period of time, followed by a soft ramp up acceleration.

DANFOSS VLT Softstarters do cover all of these applications and much more!
