MCD-200 features and benefits

Filed under: GET MCD-200 series — Ralf @ 1:29 AM

Danfoss VLT Compact Softstarter MCD-200

The MCD-200 series comes in two families, namely the MCD-201 without protection and MCD-202 with protection and they are available from 7.5KW to 110KW.

Commonly offered are the T4 models with a voltage range of 440VAC but due to the prevailing voltage spikes here in the Philippines and probably even more particularly here in Mindanao we do always recommend the upgraded T6 models because they are rated for a maximum of 575 Volts.

The price of T6 version differs to the T4 level but the benefits, meaning the added life span outweighs this adjustment by a multifold and extensive experiences also in this area have proven that already countless times, that is what we can assure!

The MCD-200 family offers easy DIN rail mounting for sizes up to 30KW, 2-wire or 3-wire start/stop control and excellent starting duty with 4 times the rated current for 6 seconds and heavy starting ratings at 4 times the rated current for 20 seconds while for such harsh conditions and in view again of the voltage fluctuations we would always recommend to upsize the Softstarter by at least one step, especially so because depending on the exact model the price would usually be elevated only by a rather negligible amount indeed and your price inquiries for comparison would certainly confirm this.

The MCD-200 family is compatible with grounded delta power systems, a perfect match for all standard applications such as for example pumps, fans, compressors, mixers, conveyors and many more, plus it is also capable for a remote operation:

Remote operation of MCD-201, MCD-202 and MCD-500 is facilitated by the dedicated remote operator kit. The operator unit is rated IP54 (or Nema 12) and is mounted on the cabinet front and allows therefore remote control, status indication and motor monitoring of an individual VLT Softstarter using RS-485 serial communication.

Here a highlight summary of MCD-200 features and its benefits.

Aside from the very well known and appreciated user friendliness we enjoy:

Small footprint and compact sizes save panel space.

Built in electronic bypass function minimizes installation cost and eliminates power loss, reduces heat built up, causes savings in components, cooling, wiring and labor.

Advanced accessories allow for enhanced functionalities.

Advanced SCR control algorithms balance without wave form allows more starts per hour and accepts higher loads.

Maximum reliability result into a maximum up time.

Essential motor protection (at MCD-202) reduces drastically overall project investments.

Password protection of parameters prevents unauthorized changes which could disrupt the operations.

Maximum ambient temperature of 50 degrees Celsius without derating eliminates the need for external cooling.

Very user friendly solutions to save commissioning time to ease the installation and to simplify the operation.

Easy DIN Rail mounting for sizes up to 30KW saves not only time but also space.

DANFOSS Softstarters

Filed under: GET MCD-200 series — Ralf @ 7:40 AM

Soft starts protect gear, goods, equipment and environment

After the completion of the MCD-500 category some moments ago I would like to continue now with the MCD-200 series, a very robust analogue Danfoss Softstarter series ideal for the more budget concerned among us.

The MCD-200 is a perfect solution and comes in the MCD-202 series likewise with a certain protection level but focuses in the MCD-201 series more on the plain start and stop functions.

Before going into more details let us recall again together what Softstarters are about. We spoke already about this product range in the GET Softstarters category but let us just quickly refresh our minds again:

An AC motor in general switched directly on to the mains power supply will ultimately struggle to reach its nominal speed as quick as possible.

This draws maximum current from the power supply and accelerates the application with its maximum torque and depending on the particular application, this can cause different problems.

Applications like pumps, conveyers, centrifuges and bandsaws must be started slowly to prevent mechanical shocks such as water hammer and strains on bands, couplings and shafts.

Principle of a Phase Angle Control:

A Softstarter is an electronic device that regulates the voltage to the motor and this provides a smooth transition from standstill to full speed operation of the application.

DANFOSS VLT Softstarters all use the principle of phase angle control, a back to back coupled thyristors ramp up of the motor voltage.

In some DANFOSS VLT Softstarters, current transformers measure the actual motor current, providing feedback for starting current control but also for numerous motor and application protection functions.

DANFOSS VLT Softstarters cover a comprehensive range:

Soft starting and soft stopping (equally important) can be controlled in a number of ways depending on the application.

Some applications require non linear voltage ramp up and the voltage ramp is therefore related to the actual current drawn. Conversely, a bandsaw as another classic example requires a quick stop function provided by a DC brake.

Then again, a number of applications require a kick-start torque for an instantaneous period of time, followed by a soft ramp up acceleration.

DANFOSS VLT Softstarters do cover all of these applications and much more!
