FC-302 offers a wide range of advanced features


One wire safety:


The VLT Automation Drive FC-302 comes standard with safe stop functionality suitable for category 3 installations as defined by EN 954-1 and SIL 2/IEC 61508. This feature prevents a Drive from starting accidentally and this is crucial for applications where preventing unintended starts are of vital importance.

The FC-302 terminal 37 can be used as so called “safe coast” for this particular purpose and this stop function satisfies also stop category EN 60204-1.

Expensive and bulky external components can be omitted, wiring can be simplified and down-time can be minimized with this solution and the safety signals can be transferred via discrete signals wiring (in compact machinery) or safe bus communication (in extended manufacturing plants)

Thev coupling of Pilz safety relay and VLT Automation Drive is perfect for safety category 3 applications. This electrical connection is extremely simple… just one wire.

VLT Automation Drive is approved for providing safe stop in category 3 installations without the need for feedback signals from the Drive to the safety relay.


When torque is the issue:


In all electric motors the torque required to accelerate and decelerate and application varies with the load and in certain applications the torque varies even for more than one reason. Torque mode with a very high precision torque control is needed then.

Taking for example winding operations it is essential to fully control the tension of the material being wound. To maintain tangential tension independently of the line speed and roll diameter the Drive is very much able to follow a wide range of torque references.

Another possible application coming into my mind would be probably in a bottling plant where the bottle cap should be neither too loose so that contents will be not spoiled or lost, nor should it be too tight to avoid damages on the cap or the bottle itself and when we start to think about it we might encounter very easy many other such torque sensitive operations where a precise torque control would be essential.


Increased Voltage ranges:


VLT Automation Drive FC-302 comes in 200-240VAC and in 380-500VAC (plus/minus additional tolerances to both sides) which is another important and interesting advantage, especially here in the Philippines and probably even more particularly here in Mindanao where the Voltage is known to vary at times actually not exactly without significance and damaged equipments could be the result.

VLT Automation Drive FC-302 comes also in 600 to 690VAC series, specially relevant for heavy industries like chemistry, water and gas supply, mining and forestry. The 690VAC versions go from 11KW up to 1.2MW.


Encoder check:


The Drive will automatically check and verify if an encoder is working well or malfunctioning and the feedback from the encoder is compared with a calculated speed.

The Danfoss VLT Automation Drive FC-302 exploits full potential of permanent magnet motors in high dynamic applications. Fast processors enable it to precisely control position, acceleration and torque.

Accessories


Dynamic braking


The VLT Automation Drive FC-300 series can be ordered with a built in dynamic brake option utilizing the latest IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) technology to provide fast deceleration of the connected motor. The dynamic brake option is a configurable option built into the VLT Automation Drive without the need of extra mounting space.

Brake resistor(s) can be used in conjunction with the dynamic brake to dissipate the heat/power regenerated by the motor during deceleration or overhauling load. Danfoss provides a large selection of different brake resistor types suitable for your application. Brake resistors must be ordered separately and field installed by the customer.


Advanced harmonic filters


VLT harmonic filters AHF 010/005

AHF-010 reduces the harmonic current to less than 10% while the AHF-005 lowers this current to less than 5%.

Both Danfoss AHF-005 and AHF-010 are advanced harmonic filters and should not be compared with traditional harmonic trap filters. They have been specially designed to match the Danfoss Frequency Drives.


Disconnect switch available


Mounting the optional disconnect switch on the front of B, C, D or E enclosures eliminates the need for a space consuming external switch box.


Sine-wave filters


When the load of a motor is controlled by a Drive, resonance noise from the motor can occur. This is due to the design of the motor and the switching of the IGBT’s (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors). That resonance frequency will correspond to the switching frequency of the Drive.

In applications where this noise is undesirable, Danfoss offers Sine-wave filters for the VLT Automation Drive to dampen these acoustics.

These filters are installed electrically between the VLT Automation Drive and motor to reduce voltage rise time (dU/dt), peak voltage (V max) and the ripple current to the motor, thus reducing the noise generated. Sine-wave filters must be ordered separately and field installed by the customer.


dU/dt filters


dU/dt filters reduce the dU/dt values on the motor terminal phase to phase voltage, an issue that is important for short motor cables.

The phase to phase voltage is still pulse shaped. dU/dt filters prolong the lifetime of the motor.

Reliable accurate load handling




The VLT Automation Drive FC-300 series estimates motor currents generated by actual loads and compensates to make for example a crane or a motor in any application start and stop smoothly just wherever it should. Other examples for such precise positioning could be hoists or elevators, etc, etc, etc.


Gentle on goods and brakes


When stopped in our above described application sample the VLT Automation Drive will slow a hoist to zero before possibly activating a mechanical brake. This results in gentler handling and virtually eliminates wear on the brakes.

Not sure if this particular situation is explained illustrative enough to see the picture but it should show how sensitive, how versatile, how functional, how powerful, how precise and how flexible and adaptable this Drive is.


Benefits:


Low torque ripple gives smooth operation.

Full holding torque capability at 0 RPM (zero speed) gives a smooth ride and reduces mechanical wear on gears and brakes.

This means less maintenance and more production uptime.


Kinetic backup


The VLT Automation Drive can utilize power generated from the kinetic energy for controlled ramp down in case of power loss. The application is ready for quick restart when the power returns. Additionally it could even ensure an uninterrupted operation when we experience one of these split second outages which often occur in parts of the Philippines.

IP55 for harsh environments

IP66 for wash down areas

All VLT Automation Drive versions have manganic phosphor rear bodies. The back of the IP66 rated enclosure is even dip coated with epoxy polyester spray finish (60 to 100 µm) while the cover is powder coated (80 to 100 µm).

The IP66 enclosed Drives are suited for installations outdoor and in wash down areas.

The silicone gasket is tested with different detergents so the Drives withstand the harsh industrial cleaning agents, prevalent especially in the food and beverage industries.

Intelligent heat management

Also very important is the cooling design. Some brands just blow and blow or suck and suck… the air that is… and the air is often directed through the electronic components.

Very effective, as a rather inexperienced observer might say but also here we better think again and we want to speak a little bit more about the Danfoss way of staying cool in the following lines:


Cooling can take place in various ways for different benefits:


Total separation between cooling air and electronics allows for solutions where heat is removed outside cabinets.

With VLT Automation Drive, a flanged heat sink kit is available for mounting the Drive in the back plate of an electrical cabinet.


Forced convection cooling:


A fan blows cold air through the cooling ribs of the aluminum base. The channel is easily cleaned without touching any electronics.


Cold plate cooling:


External cooling is possible through the back side of the aluminum base.

Innovative design reduces the risk of contaminants entering the Drive and the panel. Contaminants like dust which is really a killer for electronics in general but here in the Philippines very much in particular.

This is so because we are living and working here in a tropical environment which is not only hot but also humid, even more so in specific areas like for example steaming departments and such alike.

Any accumulation of dust covers would not only heat up the electronics but the humidity could turn this contamination even conductive, especially so during an intended or unintended standby mode or downtime because this would cool the unit down and some specific areas would even catalyze the development of additional condense water, so dust is a really a very potential killer, especially so here in the Philippines

This Danfoss solution though does ensure a long life of the Drives.

With the duct cooling kit excess heat can be ventilated outside the control room and even outside the whole building.

The need for additional air conditioning components and the attached energy consumptions of such components is limited.

A smart dedicated kit allows D3 and D4 enclosures to be mounted in Rittal cabinets so that cool air removes 85% of excess heat without contact to the electronics.

Despite all this features the Danfoss Automation Drive is not bulky or heavy equipment.


Small footprint:


VLT Automation Drive has a compact design. All power sizes are smaller than the predecessors like for example the just recently discontinued famous Danfoss VLT-5000 series. No dimension has increased and volumes are typically 20% smaller.

The Drives can still be mounted “side by side” with literally no (0 zero mm) clearance.


Conversion kit:


A conversion kit is available to facilitate exchange from earlier VLT Drives. The back plate has pre-drilled holes and the cabling from the VLT-5000 can be reused with the terminal adapter.

Award winning control panel



Just as important as the Drive itself is also something we often forget to think about because to some ears it simply sounds too banal but when we begin to contemplate it gets very clear that the local control panel (LCP) sometimes also referred to as the keypad or the display panel plays a very vital role.

Not only for the initial commissioning but of course also for the very operations and probably even most importantly during the critical times of some possible trouble shooting activities.

The phone rings in the maintenance department… It is the boss and he is very excited to see the engineers on site because the production halted. Oh my goodness, where is the manual of that XXX brand Drive? …I looked for it already the last time but couldn’t find it… I am sure you can see the picture…

… you got to go, the boss is waiting, no time to be wasted… here we go… we see now that XXX brand Drive tripped because of fault “C4”… WOW, great… so what? C4, maybe the Drive is about to explode? C4… isn’t that also an explosive?…

… We are lucky because another operator seems to remember… it is unconfirmed but he says: Engineer, I think C4 was a current overload last time…

… Not sure if the guy recalls his memory correctly but even so… what next? How to enter the menu, where can we find the settings for the current limits and other parameters to check on?…

Now I think this sample drama makes the problem quite clear already… XXX brand Drives do need manuals or magicians in order to be troubleshot and it is exactly here where Danfoss differs again because the display unit really “speaks” to you, it tells you in plain English (or another selected) language what the problem is and you simply scroll through the menu as easy and as simple as we do it every day for example with our mobile phones. In case of any questions to a certain parameter you simply hit the “info” button, really as easy as 1-2-3.

Just one Drive to run a complete production line



The VLT Automation Drive FC-300 is a single Drive concept that controls all operations from standard to servo motors on any machine or production line. The standard versions cover a wide range of functions such as PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) functionality, automatic fine tuning of motor control and self analysis of performance.

Positioning or synchronizing and even servo performance are available too. All versions share an identical user interface, so once you have operated one Drive you can definitely use them all.


Add flexibility to precision:


The new VLT Automation drive lets you alter production speed without rebuilding the conveyor. The precise pulse stop feature ensures that products always are where they should be on the line.


Speed up or slow the entire line:


Production speed can be changed at any time, even if the application involves several sections. The precise pulse reference feature makes the conveyors follow the encoder from master conveyor or virtual master Drive, effectively ensuring that all conveyors are completely synchronized.


Benefits:


The conveyor can be stopped at a precise location using an open loop system independent of production speed.

Precise pulse stop compensates for the speed of the object when it passes the stop sensor. This results into a precise stop, regardless of production speed.


Built-in smart logic controller:


The smart logic controller is a simple but very clever way to keep your Drive, motor and application working together.

The controller monitors a specific event. When an event occurs, the controller triggers a specified act and starts monitoring the next event, continuing for up to 20 (twenty!) steps before returning again to step one.

The smart logic controller is able to monitor any parameter that can be defined as “true” or “false”. This includes digital commands but also logic expressions, allowing even sensor outputs to influence the operation.

Temperature, pressure, torque, flow, time, load, frequency, voltage and other parameters combined with the operators “>” and “<” and “=” and “and” and “or” forms logical statements.

This is exactly why Danfoss calls it a “logic controller” and it is why you can program the controller to react to almost any event you choose.


VLT motion control option:


The motion control option MCO-305 is an integrated programmable motion controller. It adds even more functionality and flexibility to the Drives.

With the motion control option the VLT Automation Drive FC-300 becomes an intelligent Drive, featuring highly accurate, dynamic motion control, synchronization (electronic shaft) or positioning and electronic cam control.

Programmability lets you implement a variety of application functions such as monitoring and intelligent error handling.


Dedicated options:


More special options are available with the VLT synchronizing controller, VLT positioning controller and VLT center winder. They are all pre-programmed for these specific tasks.

The modular VLT Automation Drive



In our previous discussions we introduced already the available Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) models from Danfoss and we also referred already to the corresponding product brochures and further supporting literatures such as the manuals or programming guides which all the available parameters and its descriptions.

Basically we have the FC-51, better known as the VLT Micro as a low priced, yet though really very powerful entrance level unit for basic applications under regular conditions, our VLT-2800 series, a real robust veteran is preferred for regular V/Hz applications by some of our customers and then we have our most versatile FC-300 series which we also call the Automation Drive and we do that for good reasons because here we can really say:


Nothing is impossible!


The modular VLT Automation Drives with its FC-301 and FC-302 versions are truly a one fits all solution because there is nothing indeed these models could not handle. It is the successor of the famous VLT-5000 Drive and one real example of a product which very well may exceed some of your expectations and we certainly do hope to amaze you in this blog category.

Danfoss Drives received the Frost & Sullivan Award for product innovation 2006 for the unique VLT-Automation Drive or FC-300 series!

Let us begin with a quick overview of some initial features such as for example:


The enclosure:


The Drive meets requirements for enclosure class IP20 on the important chassis. Optional IP21 or Nema 1 (additional drip water protection), IP54 and IP55, Nema 12 (water and dust resistant from all directions) and even IP66, Nema 4X (protection against pressurized water and complete dust tight) are available!


The cold plate technology:


The Drives up to a size of 15KW (20HP) are built on a rock-solid aluminum base that is integrated with the back panel. This provides high mechanical stability, efficient cooling and the option of cold plate operation.


The display options:


Danfoss Drives removable and hot pluggable local control Panel (LCP) is now available in 28 languages. Six of these are built-in (including Chinese) two of the languages can be changed by the user.

The info button makes the printed manual virtually redundant, so the maintenance works could be done quickly because the Drive literally speaks to you.

The graphical display unit was actually designed by a previous Nokia engineer which makes it really so easy to scroll through the menus, not too much different to a cell phone!

Users have been involved throughout the development to ensure great functionality and performance. The user group has significantly influenced design and function of the local control panel (LCP).

The automatic motor adaption (AMA), quick set-up menu and large graphic display makes commissioning and operation a real breeze. It is your choice of numeric display, graphical display or blind cover.


The modular construction and ease of maintenance:


All components are easily accessible from the front of the Drive, allowing for ease of maintenance and side by side monitoring of Drives. The VFD is designed with a modular approach, allowing for the easy replacement of modular sub-assemblies.


The fieldbus option:


Options for bus communication such as for example Profibus, DPV1, Devicenet, CANopen, Ethernet/IP, etc, etc, etc and synchronization, user programs, etc, etc, etc are delivered ready to go.


The RFI filters:


Built-in RFI filters on both inputs (for complete immunity) and outputs (for emission elimination) even for long motor cables are fully compliant to the IEC 81800-3 and EN EN55011 standards.


The application options:


Available are general purpose I/O, CI encoder, resolver, relay options, ATEX and safe interface.


The DC coil:


The renowned DC coil ensures very low harmonic disturbance of the power supply and the filtering actions on both input and output again are in accordance with IEC 1000-3-2. Compact design means no need for external modules, something other manufacturers have yet to match.


The programmable options:


Available here are free programmable option MCO-305, option for synchronization, or positioning, cam control, center winding and many more.


The back channel cooling:


A unique design uses a ducted back channel to pass cooling-air over heat sinks. This allows 85% of the heat losses to be exhausted directly outside of the enclosure with minimal air passing through the electronics area.

This dramatically reduces temperature rise and contamination of the electronic components such as for example dust which is really a killer for electronics in general but here in the Philippines very much in particular.

This is so because we are living and working here in a tropical environment which is not only hot but also humid, even more so in specific areas like for example steaming departments and such alike.

Any accumulation of dust covers would not only heat up the electronics but the humidity could turn this contamination even conductive, especially so during an intended or unintended standby mode or downtime because this would cool the unit down and some specific areas would even catalyze the development of additional condense water, so dust is a really a very potential killer, especially so here in the Philippines and this special feature helps improving the reliability plus it also prolongs its own life.

There is also an IP54 rated seal in between the back channel cooling duct and the electronics area of the Drive.


The hot pluggable LCP:


The local control panel (LCP) can be plugged in or else also unplugged during operation. Settings are easily transferred via the control panel from one Drive to another or also from a PC with MCT-10 set-up software installed. This reduces very obviously the commissioning time when programming same or similar applications for example on different lines.


The input mains option:


Various input plate configurations are available including fuses, mains switch (disconnect) or RFI filters. Input plates are field adaptable if options need to be added after the installation.


The corrosive resistance:


As an option, the back channel cooling duct work and heat sinks can be ordered with corrosion protection for installations in harsh environments for example near the ocean.


The control terminals:


Specially developed spring-loaded cage clamps enhance reliability and facilitate easy commissioning and service.


The high ambient temperature:


The Drive and all its ratings are designed to give its maximum outputs at an ambient temperature of up to 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), even at IP55 ratings, another feature unmatched by many others.


The removable fan:


Like most of the elements, the fan can be quickly removed and remounted again for easy cleaning.


The safety:


The VLT Automation Drive FC-302 comes standard with the safe stop functionality. The solution is approved by authorities for category 3 installations in accordance with EN 954-1 and SIL2/IEC 61508. This feature prevents the Drive from starting unintended. Enhanced safety features are available as options.


The control voltage supply:


24 Volts supply keeps the VLT Automation Drive logic “alive” when the AC mains are removed.


The conformal coating:


The electronic components are standard coated as per IEC 60721-3-3, class 3C2. For harsh and aggressive environments an upgraded coating as per IEC 60721-3-3, class 3C3 is also available.
