What are T5 Lamps?

T5 lamps are the latest and most energy efficient lighting technology obtainable in the fluorescent lighting industry today, and it is the first linear lamp type to be served only by electronic ballasts.

Ang T5 ay ang fluorescent tube na may pinakamatipid na konsumo sa kuryente ngayon. ito ay mas mapayat kaysa sa T12, T10 at T8 na ilaw, gumagana lamang ito gamit ang electronic ballast.


What are the common applications of T5 Lamps?

T5 Lamps can be applied in places where we use ordinary fluorescent tubes. In addition, they can be used for cove lightings, cabinets and display showcase.

Maaaring gamitin ang T5 kung saan natin ginagamit ang ordinaryong fluorescent tubes. Pwede rin itong gamitin sa mga aparador, istante at cove lighting dahil sa ito ay manipis.


Types of Omni T5:


T5MF – Maintenance free (casing is made of PVC)

Maintenance free (T5MF):

The newest type of T5, it is mainly installed on new establishments because its design does not permit integration with the casings of the older T8, T10, and T12 fluorescent lamps. It is the brightest among the T5 fluorescent lamps. It is made up of Non-conductive PVC materials, offers seamless lightings, there’s a lesser chance of loose contact between tube and fixture. Enclosed lamp holders also offer safety from short circuits caused by moist and other small particles that may get into the openings of regular fixtures.

Ang T5 maintenance-free ay karaniwang inererekomenda sa mga bagong buildings, o mga bagong renovate na lugar kung saan wala pang nakakabit na lighting fixture para sa T8, T10 o T12 na ilaw.

Ang casing o lalagyan nito ay gawa sa plastic, kung kaya’t maiiwasan ang ma-ground pag ito’y di sinasadyang mahawakan habang nakasindi. At dahil ang buong fixture ay natatakpan ng plastic, hindi ito pinapasukan ng dumi o ng tubig na maaaring magdulot ng short circuit habang ito’y nakakabit sa tagong lugar. Makikita ring tuloy tuloy at walang patid ang ilaw pag ginamit itong cove lighting, kumpara sa ordinaryong T5 fixtures.

T5 Energy saver (T5LF):

The most energy saving of the Omni T5 series, also like the maintenance free T5, its design does not allow for integration with existing T8-T12 casings.

Ang T5LF ay ang pinakamatipid sa kuryente sa lahat ng T5 natin. Stand alone din itong T5LF, pareho siya sa T5MF na magandang gamitin sa bagong buildings.

This T5 design allows for integration with the existing T8, T10, T12 fluorescent lamp fixtures.  Its main purpose is to replace all existing T8-T12 fluorescent lamps with the more energy saving and high efficacy T5 Fluorescent lamps.

Ang T5 FLRS o ang reducer type na T5 ay ginagamit para palitan ang mga T8, T10, o T12 na ilaw para maging mas maliwanag at energy saving. Ito ay may adaptor sa magkabilang dulo na pwedeng ikabit sa nakaabang na fixtures para sa karaniwang fluorescent tubes.

Mapapansing malayo ang konsumo ng T8, T10 at T12 na ilaw sa nakadeklarang wattage , ito ay dahil may konsumo rin sa kuryente ang magnetic ballast na ginagamit para ito ay mapagana.

It can be seen that even though the brightness of T12, T10 and T8 are superior in total, their efficacy is less than the T5 series.

Nakikita natin base sa table sa itaas ang pagkakaiba sa liwanag at konsumo sa kuryente ng T12, T10, T8 at T5 na fluorescent sets.

Maaaring lamang ang T12, T10 at T8 sa liwanag, ngunit ito ay dahil mas mataas ang konsumo nila sa kuryente, ang T5 ay lamang sa efficacy, nangangahulugang mas mataas ang liwanag na naibibigay nito sa bawat isang watt na konsumo sa kuryente.


Color

Another factor to consider aside from efficacy is the color retention index or the CRI.  The CRI is a measure of how well colors can be perceived using light from a source.

Standard (Halophosphate) fluorescent tubes have a color rending index of 50-70% whereas the Triphosphor fluorescent tubes have a color rendering index of 85%.

T5 Fluorescent tubes operate with tri-phosphor while the available T8, T10 and T12 tubes in the market mostly utilize Halophosphate powder.

Generally, a higher CRI means that colors can be seen for what they really are.  Low CRI illuminations emit too little red light, this absence of the color makes the skin look pale, less pink; colored objects look muted and unappealing.

Hence, even if the overall lumen output of a T8, T10, or T12 is higher than that of the T5 the way that the surroundings look better and more alive with the T5 makes it the more popular choice when deciding what type of tube to use in one’s home or office.

Isang dahilan kung bakit nirerekomenda rin ang pag gamit ng T5 ay dahil mas binubuhay nito ang paligid sa pamamagitan ng ilaw na inilalabas nito.


Cost

Below are sample cases and a table depicting the energy conservation capabilities of the T5.  FLRS was the one used in the example because it is the one that can be integrated into the existing T8, T10, T12 casing.

Makikita sa sumusunod ang halimbawa kung gaano ang matitipid natin sa konsumo sa kuryente kung tayo ay gagamit ng T5 imbes na ordinaryong fluorescent tube.

Scenario: a factory that is running on 500 pieces of 36W regular fluorescent tube 12 hours a day, 300 days a year. The cost of electricity is P 10.00 per kilowatt hour.

Scenario: ang isang factory ay gumagamit ng 500 pieces ng regular na 36W na fluorescent tube, 12 oras kada araw at 300 araw sa isang taon. Ang kuryente nila ay nasa P 10.00 kada kilowatt hour.

T8 36W: Energy Consumption: 46W or 0.046KW/h; @ P 10 per KW/h: P 0.46 or P 5.52 in 12 hours and P 2,760.00 for 500 fixtures, that’s P 828,000.00 in 300 working days (1 year)


T5-FLRS: Energy Consumption: 28W or 0.028KW/h; @ P 10 per KW/h: P 0.28 or P 3.36 in 12 hours and P 1,680.00 for 500 fixtures, that’s P 504,000.00 in 300 working days (1 year)


T5-MF: Energy Consumption: 33W or 0.033KW/h; @ P 10 per KW/h: P 0.33 or P 3.96 in 12 hours and P 1,980.00 for 500 fixtures, that’s P 594,000.00 in 300 working days (1 year)


T5-LF: Energy Consumption: 22W or 0.022KW/h; @ P 10 per KW/h: P 0.22 or P 2.64 in 12 hours and P 1,320.00 for 500 fixtures, that’s P 396,000.00 in 300 working days (1 year)


Ang factory na gumagamit ng 36W na T8 ay gagastos ng P 828,000.00 sa kuryente sa loob ng isang taon.

Ang factory na nagpalit sa T5 ay gagastos ng P 504,00.000 sa kuryente sa loob ng isang taon.

Difference: P 828,000.00 – P 504,000.00 = P 324,000.00


Factoring in the initial investment for the existing T8 and T5 fixtures is shown by the table below

Cost of 500pcs 36Watts Fluorescent tube: P 49.75 x 500 pcs. = P 24,875.00

Cost of 500pcs T5 Complete set: P 349.75 x 500 pcs. = P 174,875.00

Difference: P 150,000.00


The question therefore is, about how long will it take the investment to pay off?  Below is a table to help illustrate the time in which the investment would yield savings.

Total savings of switching from T8 to T5 in 300 days: P 324,000.00

Total additional cost of switching from T8 to T5: P 150,000.00


As seen above, the energy savings from switching from the T8 to the T5 after factoring in the cost of fixtures is still P 174,000.00

Makikita natin sa itaas na pag pinalitan ang lahat ng T8  ng T5 (500 pieces each) ay makakatipid ng P 324,000  sa kuryente sa loob ng 300 days.  At ang karagdagang investment na inilabas niyang pera para bilhin ang 500 pieces na T5 ay P 150,000.oo lamang. Sa makatuwid, mayroon pa siyang savings na P 174,000.00


Average savings per day (Total savings for 300 days/ 300 days): P 1,080.00

Days it will take energy savings to pay for switching from T8 to T5 (P 150,000.00 divided by P 1,080.00): 139 days

Savings for the rest of the 161 days (300 days – 139 days): P 173,880.00


As a follow up to the previous table, we can see here that the average saving per day for the five hundred (500 pieces) T5 fluorescent fixtures is P 1,080.00; and once computed the energy savings from the T5 of P 1,080.00 per day will be able to pay off the expense of replacing the T8 with it in 139 days.  Upon further elaboration of the savings, it can also be seen that the rest of the 161 days (300 days less 139 days) will still yield a savings of almost P 174,000.00


Other notable advantages of the T5 as compared to the T8, T10, T12


Temperature


T5 Lamps provides peak light output at 35°C air temperature. By contrast, T8 and T12 lamps provide peak light output at 35°C ambient air temperature. The T5 lamp has a higher lumens-per-watt efficiency in a space where there is little or no air circulation.

Pinakamaliwanag ang T5 pag ang init sa paligid ng lalagyan nito ay umabot na ng 35°C, di gaya ng sa ordinaryong fluorescent tubes na mas dumidilim kapag umaakyat na ang temperatura sa paligid.


The T5 can withstand higher temperatures and can function without the need for air ventilation.  This is attributed to the sleek design of the T5 where the design itself circulates the temperature around the T5 evenly.  Unlike the T8 where the “hottest” spots are near the filaments of the tube (thereby shortening its lifespan) the T5 has no hot spots.

Ang T5 ay walang problema sa temperatura ng paligid.  Ang design kasi nito ay makabago.  Sadyang balanse ang init sa buong bahagi ng T5 pag ito’y nakasindi.  Ang di pantay na temperature ay nakakabawas ng buhay ng isang fluorescent tube. 


Lifespan/ burning hours

The T5 has 15,000 burning hours, while the T8 has only 9,000.  There are a lot of reasons for why the T5 has more burning hours than that of the T8, the first of which is because of the electronic ballast, the second reason why it has a longer life is because the glass tubing of the T5 is coated and has the technology which allows it to use less mercury vapor.  The mercury vapor in the T8 fluorescent tube is 15mg while the mercury vapor in the T5 is only 3mg.  Minimizing the amount of mercury also brings another very important advantage: since mercury absorption causes the lamp’s light output to depreciate over its life, the coating helps to keep light levels much closer to initial output. The T5 lamp has only 5% depreciation in the first 40% of life

Ang T5 ay may mas mahabang buhay sa T8, T10, at T12, ang buhay ng isang ordinaryong fluorescent tube ay umaabot lamang sa 9000 hours, ang T5 ay umaabot hanggang 15,000 hours. Una ito’y gumagamit ng electronic ballast, pangalawa ay dahil sa special coating ng glass ng T5.  Ang coating niya ay sadyang ginawa para mas kumonti ang mercury vapour na kailangan para gumana ang ilaw. Ang pag absorb ng mercury ng isang ilaw ay isang dahilan kung bakit humihina ang ilaw sa kalumaan.
